What an exciting time for the GOP! All across Montana, Republicans are vigorously involved in advocating for their ideals. Here are just a few of the things going on:

Convention
Sponsorships and registrations for the 2010 platform convention are taking a dramatic upward turn.  Nearly 50 people have registered so far with more coming in every day. Hurry up and register before the late registration charge kicks in on June 10. Click Here To Register!

Some folks have been having trouble getting the group rate from the hotel. When you call to reserve your room, mention “group block code gop” or else “montana gop.” That should make it easier for the hotel staff to be aware that our group rate is available to you.

Primary Election Politics
In some legislative races, a group called Main Street Advocacy is running radio ads and distributing flyers that mention one candidate. It’s a primary election, and groups have the right to advocate for their preferred candidate. However, the Montana Republican Party is not affiliated with those ads and does not sanction or endorse them. Whether it’s Main Street Advocacy, the Montana Conservative Alliance, or any other group, they have the right to campaign, and the obligation to do so under Montana’s campaign laws.

Rehberg Report
Montana Congressman Denny Rehberg signed a letter with colleagues opposing the value added tax. “This VAT is little more than a national sales tax on virtually all economic activity,” warned Rehberg.

He also cosponsored legislation that would prevent wages earned while working in the United States illegally from being credited toward Social Security benefits. “As long as we’re rewarding people for breaking the law by letting them count income earned through illegal work toward future Social Security benefits, people are going to keep coming. Talk about sending the wrong message,” Rehberg said.

MT GOP Appoints General Counsel
Today the Montana Republican Party announced the appointment of a new general counsel.  Jim Brown of Dillon, chairman of the Beaverhead County Republican Party, will step into the role.  Brown is a graduate of Beaverhead County High School in Dillon and is a fourth-generation Montanan, whose great-grandfather homesteaded in the grasshopper valley in the 1880s.

Montana Republican Party Chairman Will Deschamps said, “This is a really exciting appointment. Jim is a razor-sharp up and coming lawyer in Montana, and his willingness to donate his time and service and to help advise the party on legal matters is a tremendous benefit. We’re fortunate to have counsel of such talent.”

Brown said, “I believe in smaller government, lower taxes, promoting economic growth in Montana and multiple use of Montana’s many natural resources.  This is a great way to contribute to the Party that stands for and works to achieve those goals. I appreciate Chairman Deschamps’ consideration and confidence in me.”

Brown replaces Lance Lovell of Billings, who regretfully had to stepdown from the post for health reasons.

Chairman Deschamps said he appreciates the past service that Lance Lovell has provided to the state party and wishes him well in his travels. He has set the bar high for those that follow him and remains a reminder of what a solid republican should seek to be.
